The Center for Gifted Education is accepting registrations for the Fall 2016 Saturday Enrichment Program (SEP). The 2016 Fall program will begin on Saturday, October 29 to December 3 (no class during Thanksgiving week) in Richmond, consisting of 5 Saturday sessions.
SEP is an academically challenging program with an emphasis on inquiry-based learning for students enrolled in grades K–9. It is not meant to supplant the regular school curriculum; rather, it recognizes the importance of allowing able students to explore additional specialized areas of science, mathematics, humanities, and the arts. The program’s brochure is accessible through the Center’s website athttp://education.wm.edu/centers/cfge/precollegiate/sep/index.php. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the CFGE office at (757) 221-2166 or [email protected]. This session is only open to rising 6th graders.
Our second speaker in this series will Dr. Bernard Means, Project Director for the Virtual Curation Unit for Recording Archaeological Materials Systematically (V.C.U.-R.A.M.S.). His team of VCU Anthropology students recently visited the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to perform 3D scans of artifacts from the 18th century collier brig Betsy. The Betsy was scuttled in 1781 in the York River at Yorktown, VA during the American Revolution. He is about to embark on using 3D scans in the use of forensics- studying human bones. Dr. Means is an instructor of Anthropology in School of World Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He will be at Oak Knoll on Wednesday, February 10, from 3:45-5:00 in the Lecture Hall. He will be bringing his scanner, 3D printer, and example artifacts. This is a wonderful example of cross curricular interest. Parents and siblings are invited to attend as well. You must bring a parent with you. Contact Mrs. Burns at [email protected] or Mrs. Dossick at [email protected] with any questions. Cindy Burns, M.Ed.
