In order for a student to be considered for the Gifted Program in Hanover County, students must be referred for testing. A parent, teacher, administrator, community member or student him/herself can initiate the referral process. The initial referral and permission form to test must be signed must be completed by the due date.
For the 2016-2017 school year, testing is conducted once a year for students in grades K-12 for general intellectual aptitude or specific academic aptitude. Students can be tested for performing or visual arts beginning in the spring of the 5th grade year.
The screening process consists of a course of a standardized test and performance based tasks. In addition, a portfolio of the student's work is compiled. Samples from the classroom are included in the portfolio and home samples are optional.
